Today's Reading Luke 23.1-25

Luke 23 with Commentaries, verse by verse

Jesus before Pilate
Jesus before the Sanhedrin: Luke 22.67-71; Matthew 26.63-66; Mark 14.61-63; John 18.19-21
Jesus before Pilate Luke 23.2-3; Matthew 27.11-14; Mark 15.2-5; John 18.29-37

Pilate could not find Jesus guilty of any crimes although there were many false accusation against him. When he found out that a Galilean, he sent him to Herod because Jesus would be under Herod’s jurisdiction.

Luke 23.8.-12 this is the only account of Jesus before Herod. Herod probably wanted to see him perform a miracle to entertain him. Jesus ignored Herod. Sometimes it is better not to cast your pearl before swine. We should be wise as serpents but harmless as doves.

Luke 23.13-43
Jesus before Pilate Luke 23.2-3; Matthew 27.11-14; Mark 15.2-5; John 18.29-37

Luke 23.18-25; Matthew 27.15-26; Mark 15.6-15; John 18.39-19.16

Pilate could not find Jesus guilty of any crimes although there were many false accusation against him. Pilate was a politician and he was a coward. He did what was politically expedient for number one (Pilate). He was willing to punish Jesus and then release him. There was a mob outside, and they incited the people to yell crucify him. It was either Jesus or Barabbas. Which one would you have picked facing that situation? Pilate decided to crucify Jesus, he did not want a riot on his hands or lose his political career.
